"Derek had some interesting things to say.  One of the things that most stirred me was when he was talking about how he didn't consider his work a full-time ministry.  Ministry to him is what he does with his church & the partnerships with organizations that he & his wife have.  The illustration he used to make his point was this: his brother is a doctor.  If he wanted he could be a missionary doctor in a foreign country and then he could be considered in full-time ministry.  His brother looks for opportunities to minister in his job, but he's a doctor, not in full-time ministry.  Derek said the same thing is true of the way he sees his work.  He is a musician, an artist, his desire is to use the gifts God has given Him to sing and he looks for ministry opportunities.

I feel like I go back and forth.  I understand what he's saying, but for me personally it's hard to think of doing anything not as a ministry, with ministry defined as "being a light. doing everything to glorify God and therefore to see Him".  After hearing Derek talk and talking with others, I will agree that there are a lot of definitions ( i.e. ministry, Christian artist, etc.) that have been crystalized into narrow definitions because of culture & the culture of Christianity today and it holds people down sometimes.  Thankfully, however, God doesn't fit in a box and if we all just continue to seek Him, we will live by His definitions instead of the world's or our own."
